WHO Declares Kenya Free of Sleeping Sickness

  • The World Health Organisation (WHO) certified Kenya as having eliminated Human African trypanosomiasis, also known as sleeping sickness, as a public health challenge, making it the 10th country to reach this critical milestone.

  • Human African trypanosomiasis is the second neglected tropical disease to be eliminated in Kenya, following the country’s certification as Guinea worm disease-free in 2018.

  • The disease is caused by protozoan parasites Trypanosoma brucei transmitted by infected tsetse flies, according to the WHO. Symptoms include fever, headaches, joint pain, and, in advanced stages, neurological symptoms like confusion, disrupted sleep patterns, and behavioral changes. 

Indian Railways Conducts Trial Run of Asia’s Longest Freight Train ‘Rudrastra’

  • The Indian Railway has achieved a new milestone by successfully conduct a trial run of Asia’s largest, a 4.5 km long freight train  ‘Rudrastra’.  

  • The trial run was conducted from the Ganjkhwaja railway station in Chandauli, Uttar Pradesh to Garhwa in Jharkhand covering a distance of 209 km in 5 hours 10 minutes.

To check the supply of drugs from across the border, Punjab has launched a new Anti-Drone System (ADS) named ‘Baaj Akh’ from the border district of Tarn Taran.

UN Security Council Holds Emergency Session on Escalating Gaza Crisis

The United Nations Security Council held an emergency session in response to Israel’s decision to intensify its military operations and assume control of Gaza City.

  • Requested by several European member states, the meeting centered on the deteriorating humanitarian situation and the risks faced by Gaza’s two million residents and remaining hostages.

  • The move has sparked widespread international criticism, with UN Secretary-General António Guterres calling it a “dangerous escalation.”

Maharashtra CM Fadnavis Launches ‘Garuda Drishti’ to Detect Fraudulent Activities Through Social Media

  • Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has launched the ‘Garuda Drishti’ initiative, aimed at identifying fraudulent activities through monitoring social media platforms.

  • Additionally, the state has introduced the ‘Disha Abhiyan’ program to ensure uniform education for students with intellectual disabilities.

  • Developed by the Jai Vakil Foundation and approved by the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (NIEPID), this initiative reflects Maharashtra’s commitment to inclusivity.

  • CM Fadnavis stated that Maharashtra is the first state in the country to prioritize the needs of persons with disabilities. He emphasized that this effort aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a self-reliant and inclusive ‘Developed India 2047’.
