The GII, published by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), ranks 139 economies using over 80 indicators.

These indicators fall under seven pillars – Institutions, Human Capital and Research, Infrastructure, Market Sophistication, Business Sophistication, Knowledge and Technology Outputs, and Creative Outputs.

Global R&D growth declined to 2.9% in 2024 and is expected to drop further to 2.3% in 2025.

Europe dominates with 15 countries in the top 25, including six in the top 10.
-
Switzerland holds the top position, followed by Sweden and the United States.
-
The top 10 countries in the GII 2025 are Switzerland, Sweden, the USA, South Korea, Singapore, the UK, Finland, the Netherlands, Denmark, and China.

India ranks 38th in the GII 2025, a rise from 48th in 2020.

National Policy on Geothermal Energy 2025

India has taken a significant step towards clean energy with the launch of the National Policy on Geothermal Energy in 2025, notified by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). This policy aims to harness the country’s largely untapped geothermal resources, aligning with India’s broader commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070.

The policy outlines a comprehensive framework to support the exploration, development, and utilisation of geothermal energy, both for power generation and direct-use applications, positioning it as a reliable and sustainable energy source.

India has identified ten geothermal provinces containing a total of 381 hot springs. Key regions include:

Himalayan Province (Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand)

Cambay Graben (Gujarat)

Aravalli Province (Rajasthan)

·Godavari Basin (Andhra Pradesh, Telangana)

Other provinces are spread across Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The Geological Survey of India has mapped geothermal sites across 16 states, highlighting the vast potential for geothermal energy development in the country.

Madhya Pradesh has set a new milestone in the solar energy sector

The state's first solar energy storage project has been established in Morena.

This project achieved the lowest-ever tariff in the country at ₹2.70 per unit.

Previously, the lowest national tariff was ₹3.09 per unit.
