U.S. to End Sanctions Waiver for Iran’s Chabahar Port

  • The U.S. will end the sanctions waiver for Iran’s Chabahar Port operations, originally issued in 2018.

  • Sanctions Effective From 29 September.

  • Those involved in Chabahar Port operations may face sanctions under the Iran Freedom and Counter-Proliferation Act.

  • In May 2025, India and Iran signed a 10-year agreement on Chabahar Port operations. India has invested ₹4,700 crore (~$250 million) in the project so far.

Why is Chabahar Important?

  1. Bypasses Pakistan to access Afghanistan and Central Asia.

  2. A key part of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).

  3. Facilitates trade — especially for energy and mineral resources.

  4. Acts as a counterbalance to Gwadar Port (developed by China and Pakistan).
